We offer our entire crop each year for sale by private treaty, and the bulls sell ranging from December to May. They are weaned off of their mothers in October, and started on a TMR ration of silage, oats, hay, and a supplement pellet (until this time, the group has not been creep fed, so from February until November their mothers are working hard, raising each pound that hits our scale). They are weighed initially, and also in each month following to ensure that they are gaining accordingly, and to record performance data on each animal individually.
We cull through the pen on an ongoing basis, and we believe that every bull calf does not make a herd sire. We steer about 2/3 of our bull calves each year, and we sell only the best of what we have to offer. Each bull is semen tested and guaranteed. We try to improve the pen every year, and ensure that each bull calf has a sound, strong mother to back him up. We do not sell calves that are slow to start, excessive birthweights, or those that have had health issues along the way. We do not alter birth dates, and we compare the pens performance on adjusted basis, while taking into account the date the calf hits grass. We are happy to help with any questions you may have regarding bulls, and we are always willing to give tours of both the sale bulls, and their respective sires and dams.
Our bulls are pictured the first week of January, at less than 60 days on their feed ration, and anywhere from 1 to 3 months before they turn one year of age. We market them at this time to appeal to buyers, but would like to note that come late spring time, when the majority of similar aged bulls will sell, the pen will have gained a substantial amount of weight and will have matured significantly.
